Exposition - Review

This band is a French coldwave band with 8 members that have been creating music for the last the last couple of decades.  Their music, described as coldwave is a sort of mixture between ethereal darkwave and gothic rock.  This latest album brings out this combination in force with a powerful style that fans from many genres will really enjoy.  This album is more than just another work from this band, as many artists do from time to time, this is a concept album based on a number of famous paintings.  The band took each of these paintings and wrote a song about each one of them in both french and english.

I've been a fan of this band hailing back to the first time in the early 90's that I heard of such a thing as ethereal music with the Heavenly Voices compilations.  Over the years I've managed to pick up a few of these works and have included their tracks on the radio shows here from time to time.  With that history I was very pleased to hear about a new album from this group after a little bit of a break.  The mixture presented on this album works very well, combining Cloe's heavenly vocals with layers of percussion, electronics, violin and other acoustic instruments.  "Les sombres plis de l'ame" starts off the album in full force with this heavy and moving combination of music as a backdrop for the vocals.  The album moves on in this steady manner for a couple of tracks until we reach "Les meandres" which slows down to a slow pulsating beat and some reverberating guitar, picking up to a powerful crescendo during the chorus with grinding guitars and added, deep male vocals.  All of this is expected and quite enjoyable in this genre and will make any ethereal shoegazer fan swoon.

The mood on the album remains somewhat dark and somber though the rhythm picks up a bit on "The long shadow".  This track is excellent in the way the strumming bass moves along perfectly over the pounding drums with subtle violin and electronics weaving the tapestry for the artful way the vocals are rendered on top to create a dark and moody, yet beautiful and touching scenery.  This becomes an example of the excellent mood and beauty that permeates the music on this disc.  If you take a moment and look over the paintings as you listen to each piece, you can pick up a sense of the mood emanating from the painting, possibly the way the artist felt or the feelings the artist would like to portray.  This combination of art and music is not new and is often found through the artwork actually included in liner notes and booklets packages with the CD.  However, it's a nice touch to focus on these paintings and have tracks like "I can't see your face" inspired by "twilight fantasy" painted by Edward Robert Hughes around 1911.  This is also another stellar track and in the english language makes it that much more enjoyable for those of us that aren't that great at understanding french lyrics.

Wow, we've covered so much already and we're really only about halfway through the album.  The spectrum is so broad as we move from piece to piece, but yet there's no doubt who you are listening to and at the same time the mixing of each track and the transition from piece to piece is also very well done.  The beats and combination of electronics, guitars and violins continue to move us through dark and somber pieces like "Les Catacombes" and "L'eau des mauves" and on to upbeat, moving pieces like "Crowns of golden corn" and the final piece to the album "The island of the dead".  This final piece is an excellent gothic track, bordering on gothic rock in the vein of Faith and the Muse and Siouxsie and the Banshees.  With this final track we wrap up the album which has been enjoyable to listen to from start to finish and I can easily recommend this for fans of a broad range of gothic-related genres.
